Looking closer

Through the Merck Fellowship for Global Health – a field-based volunteering programme designed to leverage the skills and talents of its employees – Merck & Co., Inc. is helping to strengthen supply chains in Nepal. The company provided the services of five of its procurement and supply chain experts and supportive funding to Possible, a locally-based non-governmental organisation aiming to improve access to health care for the poor.

Merck & Co., Inc. supported the development and implementation of an integrated financial and logistics model to manage Possible’s pharmaceutical supply chain in two districts in Nepal (Dolakha district in Eastern Nepal, which was affected by the 2015 earthquakes, and Achaam district in western Nepal). The model, an Open Enterprise Resource Planning system, aims to integrate with Nepal’s Electronic Medical Record system, to serve as a replicable system for Nepal’s public healthcare system. The pilot has reduced medicine stock-outs from 79 to 3 per month, and has allowed Possible to better track and predict usage of pharmaceutical supplies.

Merck & Co., Inc. provided support over a three-month period in 2014-2015 (activities related to the partnership have now ceased). The partnership with Possible is particularly notable for its piloting of a supply chain logistics model that directly links with the national health record system to help strengthen supply chains in a sustainable manner, beyond the three-month partnership period.
